Doors get refinished rather than replaced. Sanding, staining and resealing, bringing a worn or weathered door back rather than paying for a new one.

A south or west-facing front door in Texas takes a serious amount of direct sun, and the finish is what fails, not usually the door. Once the clear coat goes chalky and starts flaking, UV reaches the wood underneath and it greys and opens up. Caught at the finish stage it is a refinishing job; left long enough it becomes a replacement.

The work is mostly patience. Stripping the old finish, sanding back through the grits so the surface takes stain evenly, staining, then building several thin coats of exterior clear rather than one thick one. Thin coats cure properly and do not trap solvent; a heavy coat looks good for a season and then clouds.

The exterior clear is the part that determines how long it lasts, and it is the part worth spending on. A marine or spar-type finish stays slightly flexible so it moves with the door through hot days and cold nights instead of cracking, and it carries UV inhibitors that ordinary interior varnish does not.

Doors have also come to us as part of bigger lists: staining a front door, reworking a sliding back door that had stopped running properly. Hardware, weatherstripping and how the door operates matter as much as the finish.

Common questions

Can my front door be saved, or do I need a new one?
Usually the finish has failed rather than the door. Caught at that stage it is a refinishing job. Left until UV has greyed and opened the wood underneath, it becomes a replacement.
Why does the finish on a front door fail so fast here?
Direct sun. A south or west-facing door takes a serious UV load, the clear coat goes chalky and flakes, and then the wood is exposed.
What finish do you use?
Several thin coats of an exterior clear rather than one thick one, so it cures properly. A marine or spar-type finish stays slightly flexible and carries UV inhibitors that interior varnish does not.
Do you fix how the door works, or only how it looks?
Yes. Hardware, weatherstripping and operation are part of the job. We have reworked a sliding back door that had stopped running properly.
